MARTIAL ARTS
I have practiced over 12 years of combined martial arts. During those 12 years I have practiced Northern Shaolin Kung Fu at Wing Lam Kung Fu School, Chow Gar at Yun Yee Tong Kung Fu, Tai Chi under Master Ron Lew, Aikido under Sensei John Santos. I also have practiced Qi Gong, Sen Shao Kick Boxing, and Iron Hand training. In addition to the traditional training, I also am a practitioner of Hung Gar's Lion Dance. Unlike most modern Lion Dance, Hung Gar's Lion Dance is deeply rooted in the martial arts. Movements within the lion and music are embedded with skills that one must master through rigorous training. While stunts and tricks are performed, the base to judge a skilled Lion Dancer can be viewed through the basic stance movement.
ART
The definition of art is a difficult one to form because the piece has to fulfill several criteria which can be ambiguous itself. I personally feel that art's definition has to first be a constructed work. Secondly, that work must also be deliberately manipulated to invoke one or both: emotion and thought. While I like to make art through various mediums and materials, my heavily favored tool is the computer. Digital illustration has become my primary canvas choice as it is easy to change in size, lasts as long as there will be technology, and the easiest piece to be reproduced and shared to a community further that would normally would not see the piece. While my skill in illustrating has mainly been a personal hobby, I will never wanted to use my ability to be my career. However, the skill has come quite handy in the field of education when I have to create my own graphic organizer or illustrate to students whose primary language is not English. Art has allowed me to aid everyone else around me to understand my message and what I want the students to learn.
SPORTS
Besides martial arts, I love to play soccer and I crave to swim. These are two activities that I participate in when the opportunity is presented. While I dread running, soccer is an enjoyable sport that can be friendly or competitive. The thrill of running in the grass while dribbling a leather ball towards the net always exhilarate me enough to at least temporarily forget all worries and stress for a brief moment. Swimming likewise is a highly relaxing sport for me. Unlike running long distances, which I would find any excuse not to do, swimming releases tension surrounding my chakra. Swimming, for me, is like Tai Chi which requires concentration of your energy in order to move beyond your current state. Being in the water means that you are with only one voice, your voice.
VIBRAM FIVE FINGERS
What are those things on your feet? I am glad you asked, they are my Vibram (pronounced: Vee-brum) Five Fingers and they are my minimalist shoes. While they may be ugly and crazy to some, they are my beloved shoes of choice. The shoes were design to mimic running barefoot as close as possible as a shoe would allow, and thus the typical features of a normal tennis or sport shoe are removed.
